A Message from Mom

It started at about 12:30 am. I've not had many life-changing experiences in my life, but this was the second (the first was when my Father passed away). Actually, it started about nine months earlier. But, when the moment came on THAT December 4th, nothing has ever been the same since.

Funny, sometimes I can't remember what I had for breakfast, or if I even ate breakfast, but I do remember the events of that early morning over 40 years ago.

Johnny Carson was on TV (his program was 90 minutes then) and my Mother always watched. I'd made a trip to the bathroom, was having pain, and my Mother decided it was time to call the doctor and go to the Hospital as she was certainly not delivering a baby.

We lived on the 2nd floor of a two family house on the south side in Cleveland. I insisted I could not walk down the stairs; my step-father (who had a bad back) volunteered to carry me. My Mother explained, in a very persuasive way, that I would indeed be walking down the stairs... and I did.

The doctor, who I had just seen on Saturday, assured my Mom that I was having false labor pains and not to worry. Soon we were on our way to a hospital on the other side of Cleveland.

It had snowed. There were few cars on the street. Mom said I could squeeze her hand and yell as loud as I wanted, which I now know scared the crap out of my step-father. I remember him asking why is there never a cop around when you need one and knew he was running red lights. That's about all I remember of the drive.

We got to the hospital and no time was wasted in getting me to a room. I got a double dose of pain killer and didn't make it to the 'official' delivery room ("...without the results of the test no one else would be able to use the Delivery room for 24 hours..").

At 2:09 AM on Sunday, December 4th, my son entered this world!

Hard to believe I'm old and he's all grown up. I marvel at his wisdom, love his humor (and sarcasm), admire his ability to write, and enjoy ever so much listening to him speak. I doubt if he or his sister and or brother realize how much they mean to me and how much I love them. I remember their birthing days, too.

We don't get overly emotional in our family... we just assume everyone knows how much they are loved, but just in case: I LOVE YOU!! Thank you for making my life greater than I had ever expected.

Here it is ... the start of ANOTHER year!! The beginning of a new chapter in our lives titled "2009". What will you do with this time? Do you have plans to shed some weight, start an exercise program, follow through on a brilliant idea? Are you going to stop and realize how terrific life is and enjoy the blessings we have in abundance? Or are you going to continue in your ways, changing nothing, becoming stagnant? I, personally, plan to smile at strangers like I know them, read more, complain less and offer constructive ideas.

May your year of 2009 be filled with health, happiness, and prosperity!

The financial situation

I believe this country is in a financial crisis because we have become a society of spoiled brats with a "I want it and I want it NOW" ideaology. Back in the day, people didn't have credit cards, they saved their money to make a purchase and paid CASH. I remember, if you want something, you saved up for it and it meant something; it wasn't so disposable. Could be a good thing if the banks stop issuing credit cards; who needs all those cards? One time, I started sending saving all those credit card offers; sure was a bunch.

And this "bail out" by congress? Is it really "congress" that will be doing the bail out? I think not... it will be the tax payers. The same tax payers that pay their bills. I read that if a company that is helped gives its executives over $500,000 for compensation, they will incur a heavy tax. Good grief.... if they receive over $500,000, they can afford the tax penalty... giove me the $500,000 and I'll be happy to pay a penalty!!

Something needs to be done... the American people should have woke up a few years ago. If the financial institutions have created these problems by the mishandling ofmoney, what do you think they will be doing with $700 billion more dollars?

THAT TIME OF THE YEAR, AGAIN

Here it is...that time of the year, again! Those florists and card companies reminding you that your Mother is soooooo important... Well, of course, she is important!! Without her you wouldn't be here, BUT without you, she wouldn't be a Mother!! So, maybe she should be giving you a present to show how much she appreciates the fact that you rushed her pre-mature gray hair, put her on a first-name basis with the ER workers, and practically drove her nuts during your teen years!!

Whatever you are doing on Sunday, May 11, 2008, let your Mom have a chance you tell you how much you are appreciated! Call or visit and I'll bet she'll let you know you are loved.

Dear CSR at froggifts.com:

You have no idea how disappointed I am to not receive the items I thought I had orderred.

Usually when a person orders 3 of a specific item, they receive 3 of that item. I ordered 3 sets of 3 frogs and have received nine different frogs.

As you have probably figured out by now, since I have stopped sending you e-mails about the balance of my order, that I did receive the rest of my stickers and I did receive 3 more frogs... just not the frogs I wanted. I hesitate to return them as then I would have zero frogs. I shall keep what you sent and remember to not order from froggifts.com again.

Also, I want to mention that although your phone message states that your e-mails are monitored 24 hours, I have never received an e-mail response (nor a return phone call).

MOTHER'S DAY 2007

Today would have been my Mom's 87th birthday, had she not passed away ten years ago. May always seemed like a very busy month. My Mom's birthday on the 6th, my niece's birthday on the 8th, Mother's Day always on the 2nd Sunday, somewhere in between was a cousin's and Aunt's birthdays, and then, when I was younger, FINALLY, it was time for MY birthday. Of course, now I am not so anxious for the next birthday to roll around. Seems like it comes sooo quickly. But, I am grateful that it does arrive (considering the alternative).

This is just a reminder we shouldn't need a "special" day to let our loved ones know how much we care. But, if you do need that little, extra "nudge", which the papers/TV/radio/Hallmark are so anxious to give, take the time whenever you get the chance 'cause, someday, the only way you will be able to "show you care" is to send flowers, but they won't be delivered to a residence or nursing home; they'll need to be sent to the alternative.

Soon after Christmas and the New Year celebrations, the stores stock up and get ready for one of the biggest days of the year: VALENTINE'S DAY.

This is a day that there is no way the "guys" can get ahead!! The advertising seems to be created that if you don't buy SOMETHING then you don't care, don't love her, don't whatever. This one day in the year you must SHOW her how much she is appreciated!!

I, personally, would rather receive something at various times during the year rather than a box of chocolates on just one day... but, that's ME. Help fold clothes, feed the dog, pick up your socks. make dinner, start a washer of clothes... all of those add up to "I LOVE YOU and appreciate you'.

SCHOOL STARTS AGAIN

Every year around this time you can hear the squeals of joy as the time for students to return to school nears. These sounds of happiness are usually accompanied by a glint in the eyes, up-turned corners of the mouth forming small smiles, and a cheerful tone of voice; all subtle signs of anticipation of the coming event. Look and listen...that exhilaration is not coming from the returning students...it's the PARENTS!!! Those of us who have had school-age children and were employed fulltime can relate to the elation the sound of those two words, "school starts", bring to most parents everywhere. No more million calls that "He's looking at me", no more "There's nothing to do" statements, and no more running home at lunchtime to settle things. Yes, for the next couple of weeks, mothers (and some fathers) will be walking around with BIG grins. Enjoy the moment for all too soon the boys will grow taller than you and the girls will be carrying purses...all signs of their growing up and growing independent and that's as it should be--just sooner than we want, sometimes.

How Time Flies

Have you noticed yet that the older you get the faster time passes? I remember my grandparents talking about this odd event. Sadly, some events are like a circle. And now, I realize my grandchildren will recall my discussions of the passing of time.

Some times things get put aside, to be done later, and then time has passed and it is too late; such as my reminding you of FLAG DAY.

Wednesday, June 14, 2006, is Flag Day, a day commemorating the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in 1776.

The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'. Mother's Day 2006 is Fast Approaching...

... have you wondered what it takes to be considered a "Mother" in order to celebrate Mother's Day, that is, besides giving birth and/or adopting? There are those women who step in and function as mothers; they are the sisters, aunts, grandmothers, neighbors, and friends. Teachers are sometimes substitutes for mothers. Then, there are the single men functioning as both father and mother. And, the infamous "step-mothers" enduring the 'bad rap' all because of Cindrella and Sleeping Beauty.

Just as birthdays should be celebrated by giving presents to the Mothers (after all, they are the ones who went through the pain and agony of giving birth), Mother's Day should be celebrated by mothers giving the children presents (after all, you can't be a mom without a child).

Whatever you do, do not give a membership to LifeStyles (I believe I was misinformed regarding a special LifeStyles was promoting in February).

However you decide to celebrate this special day for the special "Mothers" in your life -- ENJOY! Hugs and Kisses can't be returned to the store, exchanged for something else, and are never the wrong size or color!!

SPRING has sprung!!

Well, you wouldn't know it if you looked out your window in Columbus, OH, this morning, but SPRING has arrived... it is under the snow... same place the just budding daffodils and tulips are residing. Spring is my favorite season... everything turning green, new life, new ideas, new opportunities. It's daylight at 6:30AM when we start our day and the birds are up and singing. Just makes a person happy that they woke up! Gives you a chance to let someone know how much they mean to you. Don't pass up the moment; time lost cannot be recovered. Practice the Golden Rule. Love one another! Be grateful for all our blessings.

Valentine's Day will be here SOON! Don't Forget Mom... or your wife... or your girlfriend... or sister... or boyfriend... or husband... or any one that has a special place in your heart!

You could do like I do: wait until the day after, then R U S H to the store and buy that big heart-shaped box of chocolates for half price!!! The chocolate tastes the same.

Having a problem deciding? does your sweetie have a 'wait' problem (can't wait to eat chocolate)? Giving chocolate would be so appreciated, but you feel guilty contributing to a problem. Try an alternative: fruit, massage, go for a walk, have an uninterrupted conversation, flowers, or if your special person collects baskets, salt & pepper shakers, etc., you can add to or purchase a shelf for display. Sometimes just a phone call or hand written letter will do the job.

It's always nice to be remembered.

Wondering about Gas Prices

I really cannot understand the changes in gas prices from the morning when it was $2.17 to the afternoon when it was $2.29; what happened? Nothing I can see. No storm, no disaster, only greed of the companies providing our fuel. There ought to be a way. Surely, we can cut down on consumption when prices are outrageous by stopping our Sunday afternoon drives, combine errands, use public transportation if available, and car-pooling. I was amazed how much I saved by riding with a coworker only three days a week!!

We are a hugh force, if we join together; there has to be a way to let the fuel companies know that we can recognize "price gouging". Not long ago, the Business Section of the paper headlined that the gas companies had made the biggest profit ever... gee, wonder how that happened? Any ideas?

Yeah, yeah... today's the 4th and if I really meant it, I would have sent this message on the 1st of January! Well, the Rose Bowl is supposed to be played on New Year's Day, but it is being played now, so there you go!

Hope you enjoyed the recent Holidays and now that they have passed, there is a whole year to think about what to give for 2006. Trying to find the "perfect" present can be part of the fun; it can also be quite challenaging. Hopefully, we can be of assistance.
